Music and Words

Shaking the Kula

So, the project has been announced to the public. This has been a while in gestation, and I’m at the full scripting stage now. There is a number of ways in which this could be received I guess: there are fans of the music who will consider a side project like this to be a fun addition to the Kula Shaker experience; and there are those who will recoil in horror at the prospect, roll their eyes, with words such as ’sad’ or ‘pretentious’ tripping off the tongue. And who can blame them? Really, I get that completely. However, think of the story this way: if you’re a fan of a band of any description, certain songs, certain lyrics become lodged in your memory and occasionally things will happen in your everyday life that remind you of that music, and maybe some of those words will resonate with your own experience. That’s our starting point. And then we have this dream side to things.

So far so worthy. The dream sequences introduce us to our central character, who possibly has a link to the origins of the name ‘Kula Shaker’ and associated ideas. We have three protagonists, one per chapter, who interact with him in increasingly bizarre ways. Yes, there’s something a bit more thoughtful that we’re trying to say, but also remember it’s a comic. I usually write comics about robots the size of industrial towns and samurai pandas, so this is a bit of a change for me. But not that much. It’ll be fun. And you’ll be surprised how well the lyrics work with the story, especially some of the new ones…

Hi Jason and Andrew – this is very exciting stuff and I can’t wait to see it all happen. Being a fan of Kula Shaker and of Jason Cobley it’s definitely something to look forward to (and I’m sure I’ll end up being a fan of Andrew’s too!).

I agree that music is often linked to life events. Whenever I listen to the One Louder EP (The Jeevas) I think of the day I threw everything I owned into my Vectra and unceremoniously dumped my (very ginger) ex-wife, leaving her in cloud of tyre smoke and unburnt hydro-carbons. In particular the line – “I don’t know where I’m going but I know that I’ll die, if I have to stay here swallowing lies..” – still makes my hair stand on end. If you can translate that sort of emotion into a comic then I’ll eat my words. (So far I don’t agree with the idea of a KS comic book, but then again I always did take an agnostic approach – for years I protested that CM wasn’t three-dimensional until I met the guy, now I just think he’s from Zeta-Reticuli)
